Scottish Highers Glossary — Key Terms

Scottish Highers: The qualifications taken by students in Scotland, typically in S5, used for university admissions across the UK and internationally.

Advanced Higher: Taken in S6, covering university-level content in more depth. Closer to first-year university material.

National 5: The qualification taken in S4, equivalent to GCSEs in England. A prerequisite for Highers.

SQA (Scottish Qualifications Authority): The body that designs, administers, and certifies Scottish qualifications.

S5: The fifth year of secondary school, when most students sit their Highers.

S6: The sixth year of secondary school, typically for Advanced Highers and university preparation.

SCQF (Scottish Credit and Qualifications Framework): The national framework for defining qualification levels in Scotland. Highers are SCQF Level 6.

Credit Level: The SCQF level at which qualifications are classified, determining the level of difficulty and depth.

Unit-Based Assessment: Highers include unit assessments alongside the final exam, providing ongoing evidence of learning.

Course Code: A unique identifier assigned to each Higher subject by the SQA for registration and exam purposes.

SQA Exam: The final examination set and marked by the SQA, typically held in May.

Coursework: Assessed work completed during the course, contributing to the final grade.

Marking Instructions: The SQA’s official guide showing how marks are awarded for each question.

Grade Boundaries: The minimum marks required for each grade (A, B, C, D), determined after each exam session.

Grade A: The highest grade, typically requiring 70%+ of available marks.

Grade B: Typically requiring 60–69% of available marks.

Grade C: Typically requiring 50–59% of available marks.

Grade D: The minimum pass grade, typically requiring 40–49% of available marks.

No Award: Below the minimum pass threshold, indicating the candidate did not achieve a grade.

Band Descriptors: Detailed descriptions of what students must demonstrate for each grade in each subject.

Structured Questions: Questions with sub-parts that guide you through a problem step by step.

Extended Response: Longer questions requiring detailed explanations, evaluations, or arguments.

Data Analysis: Interpreting and drawing conclusions from presented data such as graphs, tables, and experimental results.

Cell Biology: The study of cell structure, organelles, and membrane transport.

Metabolism: All chemical reactions in living organisms, including enzyme-catalysed reactions.

Enzymes: Biological catalysts that speed up chemical reactions without being consumed.

Homeostasis: The maintenance of a stable internal environment in organisms.

DNA (Deoxyribonucleic Acid): The molecule carrying genetic instructions for development and function.

Genetics: The study of heredity and variation in organisms.

Natural Selection: The process by which organisms with favourable traits survive and reproduce.

Evolution: Change in the inherited characteristics of populations over successive generations.

Respiration: The process of releasing energy from glucose, either aerobically or anaerobically.

Photosynthesis: The process by which plants convert light energy into chemical energy (glucose).

Multicellular Organisms: Organisms composed of many cells organised into tissues, organs, and systems.

Structure and Bonding: The study of ionic, covalent, and metallic bonding and intermolecular forces.

Ionic Bonding: The electrostatic attraction between positive and negative ions.

Covalent Bonding: The sharing of electron pairs between atoms.

Metallic Bonding: The attraction between positive metal ions and delocalised electrons.

Intermolecular Forces: Forces between molecules, including van der Waals and hydrogen bonding.

Enthalpy: The heat content of a chemical system at constant pressure.

Kinetics: The study of reaction rates and the factors affecting them.

Equilibrium: A state where forward and reverse reaction rates are equal.

pH: A measure of the acidity or alkalinity of a solution.

Organic Chemistry: The study of carbon-containing compounds and their reactions.

Analytical Techniques: Methods for identifying and quantifying substances, such as chromatography, spectroscopy, and mass spectrometry.

Hardware: The physical components of a computer system.

Database: An organised collection of structured data.

SQL (Structured Query Language): The language used to manage and query relational databases.

Operating System: Software managing computer hardware and providing services for programs.

CPU (Central Processing Unit): The processor that executes instructions.

RAM (Random Access Memory): Temporary storage for data and programs in use.

Polynomial: An expression with variables and coefficients combined using addition, subtraction, and multiplication.

Surd: An irrational number expressed as a root, such as √2.

Indices (Exponents): Rules for working with powers: multiplication, division, power of a power.

Trigonometric Functions: Sine, cosine, and tangent, relating angles to side ratios in right-angled triangles.

Calculus: The study of rates of change (differentiation) and accumulation (integration).

Differentiation: Finding the rate of change of a function with respect to a variable.

Integration: Finding the area under a curve or the antiderivative of a function.

Vectors: Quantities with both magnitude and direction.

Scalar Product: The dot product of two vectors, resulting in a scalar.

Normal Distribution: A bell-shaped probability distribution used in statistics.

Kinematics: The study of motion without considering forces.

Dynamics: The study of forces and their effect on motion.

Wave Properties: Wavelength, frequency, amplitude, and speed of waves.

Radioactivity: The spontaneous emission of radiation from unstable atomic nuclei.

UCAS (Universities and Colleges Admissions Service): The UK-wide system for applying to university.

Personal Statement: A written account of your academic interests, motivation, and preparation for your chosen course.

Predicted Grades: Grades estimated by teachers for students in their final year, used in UCAS applications.

Higher Offer: A university offer based on achieving specific Higher grades.

Advanced Higher Offer: Offers requiring specific Advanced Higher grades, often for competitive courses.

UCAS Tariff Points: Points assigned to qualifications for university entry requirements.

Adjustment: A period after results day when students with better-than-expected grades can apply to more competitive courses.

Clearing: The UCAS process for finding available places at universities after results day.

Extra: The UCAS process for applying to courses that still have vacancies after the main application cycle.

SQA Results Day: The day in August when SQA examination results are released, a key date for university admissions.

Active Recall: Actively retrieving information from memory, such as through flashcards or practice questions, rather than passively reading notes.

Spaced Repetition: Reviewing material at increasing intervals to strengthen long-term retention.

Past Papers: Official SQA exams from previous years, the single most important revision resource.

Timed Practice: Completing practice questions under exam conditions with a time limit.

Diagnostic Quiz: A short test to identify strengths and weaknesses across a subject’s topics.

Revision Notes: Concise summaries of key concepts for quick review.

Study Timetable: A planned schedule allocating specific time blocks to each subject.
